Social and economic changes in the face of the COVID-19 threat could lead to long-term, profound changes in the way we travel. The aviation industry will struggle with the impending crisis, closed borders, rising costs, reduced passenger numbers and environmental concerns. More and more countries are considering going back to basics and expanding international long-distance rail connections. Unfortunately, most sleeping cars are not adapted to the requirements of modern passengers, the applicable hygiene standards and the principles of physical distancing. I designed a modular sleeping capsule with a luggage hatch. The capsule can be entered from the long side. The mechanism of double-leaf, folding doors is safe and does not take up space in the corridor. The inner door provides access to luggage without having to leave the capsule. The upper capsule is accessed via a composite ladder that is stored in a drawer under the lower capsule. Inside the capsules there are LCD touch panels that show the view from the outside, give access to multimedia functions and are used to control lighting and air conditioning. The capsules can be installed in traditional cars or in other hotel facilities.
